August is officially National Sandwich Month, so there’s no time like the present to grab some flatbread and, well, celebrate sandwiches. And what better time than August, really, when summer is at its peak and the high temperatures are relentless? It’s hardly the time to turn on the oven or even stand over a blazing stove or grill. Nope, hot summer days and nights call for sandwiches made with the garden’s bounty, or leftover grilled meats and vegetables, or even a chicken salad made on the fly.

I don’t know about you, but summer is a crazy busy time. From the moment I wake up, it’s rush, rush, rush: work, walk the dogs, water the yard, manage this, oversee that. My mental workload is at an all-time high. And by the time I finish working out, it could be as late as 8:30, with a hungry household to boot.

Enter Flatout Foldit flatbreads. I love these little babies because not only are they substantial and delicious,  they’re the perfect size to hold all my favorite sandwich fixings. Just today, I made a quick lunch Foldit with a thick slice of tomato, a slice of fresh mozzarella, some salt, pepper, and a few leaves of basil. No recipe, just summer at its best! If your tomatoes aren’t quite ripe yet, you might try this halloumi sandwich with quick-pickled onions for a salty-sweet-tart lunch using Greece’s famous, grillable cheese.

It doesn’t have to be fancy, as long as you use fresh, quality ingredients, either. Take Kyle Cherek’s turkey sandwich with micro greens,  for example. Simple and delectable from someone who knows his food. There’s also a soft, luxurious chicken and avocado sandwich that would be perfect for a summer picnic in the park.

If burgers are your favorite type of sandwich, have I got a couple for you! Ground bison makes a fantastic BBQ style sandwich complete with the melted cheese of your choice. Or an Indian spiced chicken burger with cooling cucumbers and yogurt. Make the mix in the morning, turn on the grill for 10 minutes tops, later on for dinner. You’ll love them both, I promise!

Oh, yes, Sandwich Month means ice cream sandwiches too! Foldits make excellent ice cream sandwiches, which can then be dipped in chocolate and rolled in whatever you like: nuts, sprinkles, chocolate shavings, almost anything. These new matcha coconut ice cream treats are begging to be made for visiting friends this weekend; the tannic properties of the tea is he perfect match for rich vanilla ice cream.

Summertime means sandwich time, and August is the ideal month to pay tribute to the most noble meal of all. All you have to do is let your inner Dagwood shine and make up your own flatbread masterpiece!

Shine on, sammie chefs!
