As if we need an excuse to celebrate chocolate, here it is: National Chocolate Day! Just to get a jump start on this beautiful, glorious holiday, I’ve already eaten some chocolate, even though it’s early in the morning. (What can I say, some days seem, well, harder than others.) Ayurvedic practices recommend eating chocolate in the morning, so I have an excuse. That means that you do, too.
Chocolate Day is way more exciting to me than, say, Peanut Butter Day. You can have your peanuts, give me the chocolate. Because chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is really good for you. It’s high in magnesium, copper, iron, fiber, and manganese. It raises your dopamine levels, which makes you calmer and happier, and it’s huge source of anti-oxidants. Oh, also, it tastes fabulous.
I can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Chocolate Day than with 5 of my favorite chocolate filled flatbread recipes. Whether you like it hot, gooey, cool and smooth, dark, or on the healthy side, these flatbread recipes have what you’re hankering for.
Got a pomegranate sitting around? Bake up some flatbread and make this spectacular dark chocolate brittle with pomegranate seeds and walnuts. From oven to table in about ten minutes, I promise you! If you have more time, please try this chilled Greek yogurt chocolate pie, which uses flatbread as a crust. It’s light and healthy and perfect for a weeknight dessert.
Kids and adults alike love a s’more, and they’re easy to make in the oven when it’s too cold and snowy to build a campfire outside. Use dark chocolate for maximum health benefits, we dare you.
Watching calories is easy with flatbread. We hacked our favorite dessert, the ice cream sandwich, by using flatbread and frozen yogurt, and them dipped them in melted dark chocolate and mini chocolate chips. You can even make mini sandwiches for a delicious dessert with even fewer calories! When chocolate is involved, it’s all about quality, not quantity.
A warm crêpe filled with silky smooth chocolate hazelnut spread and fresh red berries might be just the thing for the end of a romantic dinner for two. Forget the batter, just use flatbread! A sophisticated chocolate dessert that’s best shared with a glass of port and a book of romantic poetry. Or an episode of The Good Wife, it’s really your call.
Whatever you do, even if you just nibble on your favorite bar at your desk today, celebrate and savor the rich (and healthy!) magnificence that is chocolate. You have our permission!
